There are some parts of Bangkok where it is better to get around by express boat. This is certainly true around Rattanakosin Island which is the old part of Bangkok. This is where most of the tourist sites are also. Tourists do use the express boats but so do the locals. They are often packed as they zooom up and down the Chao Phraya River. They are also very cheap. The Chao Phraya itself separates Bangkok from Thonburi and is always full of all kinds of boats - longt ailed tourist boats, express boats, river ferries, pleasure boats and tugs pulling heavily laden barges. It is a very busy river.
