Galungan is the most important feast and festival to place on the Indonesian island of Bali. The festival occurs every 210 days and lasts for 10 days, the last day of which is known as Kuningan. It is a Hindu religious festival when the Balinese Gods visit Earth, as do the dead who are welcomed by the prayers and offerings of their living relatives. Kuningan is the day that the Gods return to their spiritual world.
Galungan always starts on a Wednesday, but the holiday usually begins the day before when a “penjor” is constructed by each household and food and offerings are meticulously prepared. A penjor is a long bamboo pole which is decorated and erected outside the house. The effect is very decorative and creates a festive atmosphere.
